DEMOLITION OF AVIATION FUEL DEPOT AT HEATHROW

This prestigious £ 3.7 million project involved the demolition and asbestos removal at the Hatton Cross site in Heathrow Airport.
With a programme duration of 12 months, this project covered a site of 7.3 hectares to the south-east of Heathrow and involved the demolition of diverse structures from 1960's constructed multi storey office blocks to an aviation fuel depot, incorporating some 14 cylindrical tanks.
Strategic planning was required to guarantee continuity of works taking into account the demolition element, the incorporation of over six months of asbestos removal works and the completion date being achieved within the contract period, all satisfying health and safety legislation and surmounting various restrictions.
The main restrictions on this project were not only the removal of the asbestos based products but also the 'live' services running through and around the site which, incidentally, fed numerous buildings and hydrants around the airport perimeter; an absolute must for safe airport operations. By working closely with the airport engineering departments, we were able to devise a methodology that effectively and safely avoided interruption of these crucial services and retained their use. As ever, environmental issues were key to this project. It was once again, with meticulous planning and considerable investigation that we achieved a minimum of 90% recyclability on the overall project, ultimately resulting in all but contaminated materials being recycled.
